Forgive Teradata Corporation for doing a little bragging. It’s just that the Ohio-based data warehousing and enterprise analytics company is proud that Nationwide Insurance, one of its long-time customers, has received an Innovative Solution Award from DM Review, a technology publication.
Nationwide was considered for the award because of its massive implementation of a data management infrastructure— FOCUS—featuring a centralized data warehouse for financial intelligence that supports a Master Data Management (MDM) initiative. FOCUS enables the consolidation and centralization of data from more than 200 sources, integrating ledgers, charts, and 300,000 spreadsheets. According to Teradata, the infrastructure has redefined the role and operating model of Nationwide’s core finance functions, processes, and systems. In addition, Nationwide’s unique MDM system not only extracts data from operational systems into the data warehouse, but also sends MDM data back out to the operational systems to ensure the integrity and consistency of data throughout the enterprise. “The Nationwide finance data warehouse is a vital component in a broader data integration infrastructure that knits together both analytic and operational systems,” explained Tobianna Zappe, data warehouse manager for Nationwide. “This qualifies Nationwide as one of the vanguard organizations successfully extending enterprise data integration technology beyond its single-purpose roots to form the foundation of a comprehensive information ecosystem that spans analytical and operational realms.” Because of the FOCUS initiative, Nationwide has saved almost a million dollars due to improved processes and elimination of previous legacy processes—in just one year. In addition, productivity has increased: the FOCUS core development team operates with only 10 members, compared to departments with siloed information that operate with about 80 people. “We congratulate Nationwide Insurance for its innovative thought leadership in data management,” said Rick Morton, Teradata industry vice president for financial services, insurance, and health care. “This is truly a powerful case where the integration and centralization of enterprise data for both analytical and operational purposes has provided significant return on information technology investment.” |
