Minneapolis-based Ameriprise Financial is dedicated to assisting Americans with financial needs. At the opposite end of the spectrum from those who are building a comfortable nest egg are Americans who struggle just to pay their basic bills each month.

Minneapolis-based Ameriprise Financial is dedicated to assisting Americans with such disparate needs.

Ameriprise ended 2007 by distributing more than $1 million in grants to almost 60 nonprofit groups across the country. In addition, the company announced new grant-making platforms for 2008. The financial planning and services company will look to bestow grants on nonprofits that meet at least one of the following requirements:
  • Provide for the basic needs of people, such as food, shelter, and self-sufficiency. Support will focus on organizations that also provide training, counseling, or other resources to help people stabilize their lives.
  • Support community vitality, including programs and services that address economic vitality, cultural enrichment, civic leadership, and environmental causes, as well as those that provide disaster relief and recovery.
  • The volunteer and donation efforts of employees and advisors, which Ameriprise already has been supporting. However, the company this year will begin to fund retiree causes.
“We are fortunate to be in the business of helping clients plan for their financial goals and dreams,” said Brian Pietsch, vice president of state government affairs and community relations at Ameriprise Financial. “Of course, we also recognize that there are many people in our communities who struggle daily to afford basic necessities, like food and shelter. What better way to give back to those who are less fortunate than to focus our time, energy, and resources on meeting basic needs and on supporting programs that build strong, vital communities?”

Grant application deadlines for 2008 are February 1, May 1, and September 1. Additional information about applying for an Ameriprise Financial grant is available at the company’s Web site.
