The Lincoln Financial Foundation wants to make its Lincoln Museum Collection more accessible and visible to the public as the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial nears. The Lincoln Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Lincoln Financial Group, owns one of the most extensive collections of items connected to America's 16th president, including a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and a Thirteenth Amendment signed by Lincoln.

But in order to bring these and other historic treasures to the public, the Lincoln Foundation will close its Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Lincoln Museum, effective June 30, replacing that limited exposure with two new efforts.

First, the foundation will seek public partners with whom the Lincoln Museum can explore exhibition options for its three-dimensional items. Through invitation, the foundation will host a national informational session with potential public partners later this month to educate them about the items in the collection and to discuss options for increasing visibility.

Second, the museum will digitize the documents in order to make the entire collection more accessible to a greater number of people.

In addition to the items mentioned, the Lincoln Collection includes:
  • 7,000 19th-century prints
  • 5,000 original 19th-century photographs
  • 350 documents signed by Abraham Lincoln
  • 18,000 rare books and pamphlets
  • 200,000 newspapers and magazine clippings
  • 350 19th century sheet music titles
  • 79 3-dimensional items
"By collaborating with other museums, the Lincoln Foundation hopes to make these items available to a greater number of people using Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial as a catalyst," said Priscilla Brown, vice president, Lincoln National Corporation.
