A public hearing is to be held on May 30, by the National Association of
Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) focusing on the growing health care costs in the
United States. The hearing will be part of the NAIC’s Summer
National Meeting in San Francisco
and is hosted by Health Innovations (B) Working Group.
Members of the Working Group will hear statements from those who have a
vested interest, as well as those who are working to make healthcare more
efficient and affordable. This will include testimony from physicians,
hospitals, health insurance companies, self-insured health care purchasers,
organized labor, state Medicaid programs, as well as representatives of
stakeholder groups.
According to Illinois Insurance Director Michael McRaith, who chairs the
Working Group, “State insurance regulators are acutely aware that the
increasing cost of health care is contributing to the difficulty many Americans
face when trying to find affordable health insurance coverage.” McRath added, “We are hopeful that this
hearing will help us devise effective solutions to this growing problem.”
Formed in 1871 the National Association of Insurance Commissioners is a
voluntary organization of the chief insurance regulatory officials of the 50
states, the District of Columbia
and five U.S.
territories. NAIC’s purpose is to help state insurance regulators maintain the
financial stability of the insurance industry from offering financial,
actuarial, legal, computer, research, market conduct and economic expertise.
