Financial advisors seeking the Certified Financial Planner designation may already know they can earn this certification through the University of California, Irvine Extension.

But advisors who work or plan to work with high-net-worth clients should note that UC Irvine Extension is offering a new online elective course as part of its Personal Financial Planning Certificate Program. The course, “Advanced Financial Planning Strategies for High-Net-Worth Clients,” will be held online June 30–September 12.

The course will provide students with an understanding of the latest high-net-worth planning devices, techniques, and strategies with an emphasis on domestic and offshore asset protection strategies and application to California income, estate, and gift tax planning. It also will teach strategies and techniques for the development of a formal financial planning presentation for clients using advanced financial, tax, and estate planning topics.

“High-net-worth clients have an array of unique needs, which financial planners must understand and be comfortable with in order to succeed,” said Lori Munoz-Reiland, director of business, management, legal, information technology, and corporate solutions for UC Irvine Extension. “This class prepares students to excel in satisfying the specific demands of this type of client.”

Course instructor Richard C. Watson III is the managing partner of Torres & Watson, an independent financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial. His planning experience includes advanced estate planning and income taxation, particularly for clients subject to the alternative minimum tax, and executive compensation and tax-aware investment management issues.

“Since needs of high-net-worth clients are so unique, it is important to identify specific financial planning tactics that will benefit them the most,” said Watson. “Participants in this course will be armed with an assortment of guiding principles to help them better serve high-net-worth clients.”

After taking this new course, students will have a better understanding of:

  • Asset protection considerations in financial planning
  • Financial and estate planning for restricted stock
  • Financial and estate planning for compensatory stock options
  • Charitable giving of works of art and other collectibles
  • Valuation freeze techniques—QPRTS, GRATs, GRUTs, and intentionally defective grantor trusts
  • Succession planning for family businesses
  • Business entity valuation strategies—family limited partnerships/LLCs, valuation considerations and the chapter 14 rules
  • Generation-skipping tax issues for high-net-worth clients
  • Sophisticated life insurance techniques
  • International tax and estate planning considerations in financial planning

UC Irvine Extenion’s Personal Financial Planning Certificate Program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc.
