Sarasota, Florida, has been home to one of the world’s best powerboat races for more than 20 years.

Over the July 4 weekend, offshore racing fans were treated to the 24th running of the “crown jewel” of powerboat races, the Sarasota Offshore Grand Prix, one that featured the successful Miss GEICO race team.

“The biggest and best boats . . . come out to race here,” said John Haggin, owner of the Miss GEICO team. “This is where the season gets serious and the best walk away winners.”

As it turned out, Miss GEICO ran away with the win.

The 6.5-mile race included more than 40 powerboats and a showdown between the 39-foot Miss GEICO and 50-foot Bud Light boat, the fastest powerboats in the world. Both boats can travel up to 200 mph.

Miss GEICO triumphed over Bud Light to win the title of Fastest Powerboat in the World.

According to Marc Granet, driver for the Miss GEICO, the Sarasota race is suited for showcasing the boat’s twin turbine engines—which are, in fact, helicopter engines.

“Sarasota now hails as the performance boat capitol of the world, replacing North Miami’s Thunder boat row as the greatest concentration of high-tech manufacturers,” the driver said.
