Two MassMutual Senior Executives Earn Promotions

October 9, 2003 marked the promotion of two of MassMutual Financial Group’s senior executives. Andrew Oleksiw was named to the position of executive vice president at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). He will head the company’s International Insurance, Large Corporate Markets and Mergers & Acquisitions fuctions.
 

State of South Dakota Chooses Carrier for Government Retirees

Bankers Life and Casualty Company, which specializes in insurance products for seniors, was successful in their bid to provide coverage for 1,100 senior government retirees. Their former carrier no longer operates in South Dakota, forcing the state to secure competitive bids.
 

Federal defers judgment on intellectual property suit

A federal judge on Aug. 14 deferred until Aug. 25 a decision on whether to issue an injunction against Arrowhead General Insurance Agency Inc.'s use of certain computer software. The deferral of Southern District Chief Judge Marilyn Huff's ruling on the injunction sought by Los Angeles-based Westbourne International Inc. underscores the complexity of the issues involved in litigation brought by Westbourne against Arrowhead, said Francis D. Ruyak, Arrowhead president and CEO.
 

State says steep malpractice hike will disrupt care

A proposed steep increase in malpractice insurance rates affecting most Maryland physicians quickly will cause some medical practices to limit their ability to provide care, according to MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society. Testifying today before the Maryland Insurance Commissioner on a proposed 28 percent rate increase by Medical Mutual, the state's largest malpractice carrier, MedChi presented results of an independent actuarial analysis of the proposed rate showing that soaring growth in the size of malpractice claims makes the increase "painful but necessary."
 

AAHP report highlights health plan promoting prescription health and safety

The American Association of Health Plans on Aug. 6 issued a new report highlighting health plan pharmacy programs that promote safety and effectiveness in the use of prescriptions drugs by consumers. In issuing the report, which describes dozens of programs and results from plans across the country, AAHP called on Congress to take full advantage of these unique capabilities in crafting a final bill adding a prescription drug benefit under Medicare.
